Teaching & Research Fellowship Opportunities

Background

The laboratory is based at The University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center under the Directorship of Bryan W. Cunningham, PhD (Left) and Paul C. McAfee, MD, MBA (Right), former Chief of Orthopaedics at Johns Hopkins Hospital and now Director of Spine Surgery, University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center

Due to the international recognition of the laboratory, board-certified orthopaedic surgeons from across the globe have the opportunity to work as non-clinical research fellows together with attending staff. Research fellows obtain an excellent basic science research foundation upon which to build their clinical practices.

The laboratory has hosted internationally recognized orthopaedic spinal research fellows from Japan, China, Sweden and Korea. It is the ongoing collaborative effort with both research and clinical fellows from around the world that provides innovative and advanced technology for the surgical care and treatment of spinal patients. Fellowship opportunities are available for self-funded foreign medical graduates with specialization in orthopaedics and/or neurosurgery. Successful completion of a medical doctorate (M.D.) is required for application to the fellowship program.

The overall objective of this non-clinical research training program is for fellows to become proficient in the methodological aspects of conducting basic scientific orthopaedic spinal research. Following an orientation program of selected scientific readings and laboratory standard operating procedures, the research program itself will include selection of a study topic related to spine, study design, selection of pertinent experimental endpoints, conducting the experiment, analysis of the data acquired and publication of the study data in a peer reviewed journal. An emphasis will be placed on addressing clinically relevant issues of new surgical reconstruction techniques using spinal instrumentation and bone graft substitutes.

Areas of Research Include:
